2.5 hour pose

I found a group of artists who get together every Friday to draw or paint from life. I'm hoping that this will help my color skills as well as my drawing skills.

Some interesting things were going on with the light. She was seated by a window and the lights were on in the room, so there was cool light on one side of her face and warm light on the other. The shadows and values were a real challenge for me. I got the drawing down in 20 minutes and spent the rest of the time wrestling with color.

I forgot to say, this is a pastel on 18" x 22" paper.

Hi Brenda,

That's really nice! I like the colors you chose to show the different planes of the face and the warm and cool light on her skin.

Simply beautiful! I like the subtle definition on the close side.

You might want to try and get the group to agree to turn the room lights off. That will make everyone's life easier.

Believe it or not, Michelle, we did have that conversation. I was the only one sitting on the room-light side of the model. I don't think it was as much an issue for anyone else.

I did think the challenge was interesting, though. I'm not concerned about 'easy'. Just as long as I don't put myself into an'impossible' situation.

I knew I could count on you for some practical advice, though!

Thanks, Alexandra and Lacey. It was a fun exercise!
