Portrait of Daniel

I hold a class in the summers on the techniques of Antonio Mancini. This is a demonstration for the class.

This is an oil on canvas of a life size head. All brushwork was laid directly on the canvas without a block in. The emphasis here is on simplicity of structure. All of my efforts were concentrated in paint handling. Mancini delighted in paint handling all of his career. The man just simply loved to paint. It is a joy to view one of his works and to see the surface. It is like a dance.

Sometime try, in one of your studies, instead of pulling a brushstroke in the traditional sense, to rolling the bristles across the canvas with a loaded brush. It is nearly impossible to come up with a sharp edge this way. And it sure is a lot of fun. I hope you will try this technique and post your results also.

A fan of yours

Clayton, there is not one of your paintings that I don't fall in love with. Thank you for posting. I learn from everything that you place on this site and your website.

Carol
