Nude, a study in line
This was a demonstration for my class in line drawing. It is done on a full sheet of Canson Paper. The model held the pose for approximately 2 1/2 hours with breaks. No eraser was employed. Each line was laid down with the final work in mind.
All work such as this can be very difficult because of the obvious inherent problems with drawing. Most drawings require some sort of "block in", this was not the case with this piece. I started in one spot, namely the head, and worked out from there. This requires a clear mental image and a great deal of planning before the work is begun. I decided to include all of the normal problems one would run into with figure-work. We have a portrait with a specific expression and a likeness and we have a highly foreshortened figure along with very expressive hands.
I highly recommend doing this type of study, even if your drawing suffers a bit, in order to make advances in the area of line. There is a freshness to the approach that is unmatched when one does not allow for corrections. Frankly, it also puts you on your toes. It makes my heart grace every time I do one of these types of studies as I know I have know not to save me so to speak. You will begin to draw on everything that you know about your subject and about drawing. It will highlight any areas of weakness that you need to work on. Good luck in your endeavors.
