Dr. Sketchy
There is a phenomenon I found out about through the internet called Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School. It was begun in New York by a burlesque dancer who modeled and thought life drawing should be "sexier". Molly Crabtree is also an illustrator and quite a motivator. These events included drinking games and high rowdiness and have spread internationally. My local incarnation is much more subdued but strives for the less traditional.
I attended last month. It is held in the Downtown Arts District in Phoenix in a converted bungalow that triples as bar. gallery and open studio setting. Oh! And it runs from 9-midnight!
Getting my feet under me, I over-prepped and found a lot of challenge just seeing my paper in the darkened setting. This week I just brought a charcoal tablet. The model was also the subject of my 6 hour studio pose two weeks ago (which I posted in the nude section), and was stunning in an emerald green and black Merry Widow costume with a jaunty veil and hat.
I just did a portrait but it was all sorts of fun talking and sitting and having an ACTUAL BEER with a great bunch of artists and students.
I shall return!
