Full length portrait
Hello,
I've been taking all the good advise from this forum to heart and have begun to paint some proper sample portraits. Last month I planned out several portraits with sketches and color studies before I even took one reference photo. This step really helped me a lot and I knew what I was aiming for when I went to take photos. I had a few models lined up and got some really good reference photos.
This portrait is one of the results. It is intended to be my first sample of a classic full length portrait for my portfolio. I changed my palette a little and am much happier with these skin tones. I also used the scumbling method of painting for the first time and now I'm hooked on it!
Thank you for looking,
Julie

Way to go, Julie! Nice color selection, beautiful skin tones. Don't you love scumbling? I'm hooked on it too. But you do a very nice job of blending your paints, too.

Julie, what a great job you have done. This is a huge undertaking for anyt method of painting, especially scumbling. You have such a nice pose and really great lighting. I love your skin tones. They are improved beyond measure. Very beautiful. May I also say that you have made a giant leap forward in your skill level on this one? I notice you have carefully attended to your edges, more than your prior work. I think you have found your thing! It's nice to see your dedication paying off so handsomely.

Thank you Julie! I really do like scumbling much more than I thought I would. About halfway through this one I got tired of the whole thing and thought I'd never finish it. But after layer 3 or 4 it started to look like I wanted. That's when it became fun. I found it much easier to blend this way also. Thanks so much for commenting!
Thank you too Lisa! You really boost me up with your kind comments! I premixed Burnt Umber and White and a little Raw Sienna to make a basic skin tone for this painting. This was something I had never done before and it really made color decisions much easier for me. The underpainting really helped also. Thank you for commenting on my edges. I was particularly conscious of them this time. I appreciate you mentioning my improvement! Like everyone else, I always strive to make each painting better than the one before it.
Thanks again,
Julie

Go, Julie!
I'm so impressed! Classic pose, good lighting, and overall beautiful light and shadow quality. I think this will definitely get you some commissions.

Thanks so much Alex! Speaking of commissions, this evening I made arrangements for a photo shoot for my first oil commission!
I will do this one now and then after the first of the year I have some marketing strategies to put into place. I hope to get the ball rolling then. I know it will take time but I'm patient and will continue to produce the right kind of samples.
Thanks again!
Julie
