Quartz lighting

Dan Gerhartz mentioned several times last night that he used 'regular quartz lighting' for those paintings that were inside - yet looked they were with the last really orange light of the day hitting the subjects through a window.

So I head over to the hardware store to find a quartz light and they have none, exccept in their book are some halogen quartz bulbs you can order. I was under the impression that quartz and halogen are two seperate types of bulbs.

Can anyone clear this up for me?
