Holly, artists who are members of Stroke of Genius are listed by location, so you could always look to see whether any familiar names are listed on the SOG site for the states you'll be passing through. As far as galleries go, the ones around here don't want to show portrait art because it's almost entirely commissioned work and isn't for sale. They make their money through taking a cut when a work on display is sold.

Don't know whether that helps!

Hi Leslie,

Thanks for the information. I did look at the artists on the Stroke of Genius site, beginning with those in the states we'd be traveling through. As you said, portrait art is generally not displayed publicly. However I was hoping to find something like the Matteucci Galleries that show William Whitaker's paintings. I did stumble upon the Portrait Society of Atlanta's web site who (unfortunately for me) recently concluded their spring juried exhibition, and a few portrait brokers' web sites, who said they keep a couple of paintings on display, but mostly portfolios.

I continue to learn so much from portrait artist's paintings in books, but seeing others' paintings in person would be a completely new level of inspiration. Perhaps I should be looking more for old masters work displayed in museums. I'd love to see an original Bouguereau.

Holly

Bouguereau in Ocala

Hi Holly,

The Appleton Museum of Art (run by FSU) in Ocala, FL, has a Bouguereau. Call the registrar before going out of your way to visit to be sure it's currently hung and not on loan.

Keep us posted on what you find in your research.

Zorn

There's at least one great Zorn at the Biltmore in Ashville, NC.

Bouguereau in Raleigh, NC

There is a Bouguereau in Raleigh, NC at the NC Museum of Art on Blue Ridge Road. I can't find the information online about it - but I think it says it is "attributed to Bouguereau". The name of it is Young Girl Tempted by Eros (I think). It is very large. As I said, I cannot find exact information on it from either the museum site or ARC.

There are also portraits there by Copley (2 or 3). There is one very large family portrait by Copley which, in my opinion, is worth the visit. The rendering of the satin dresses, drapery is amazing.

This museum also has an extensive collection of High Renaissance paintings.

Mari,

I checked with the museum in Ocala and they actually have a few Bouguereaus. I'm so excited to see them, thank you very much for the tip.

Timothy,

I had not heard of Zorn, so I looked him up on ARC (forgive me for being such a neophyte). You do mean Anders Zorn, right? I'm absolutely floored by his amazing versatility of style, color palette, and lighting conditions. It seems that some of his paintings would be at home in the 18th century, and some could be modern day. Also, this has probably been brought up before, but the resemblance of Zorn's "Mrs Frances Cleveland" to Sargent's "Lady Agnew" is striking. Thank you so much!

Denise,

The North Carolina Museum is most definitely worth a visit, thanks!

Brushwork

If you like bold brushwork; say Sargent, wait till you see a large Zorn (in person)...1 and half inch brushes!

Right, Tim, it's a spectacular Zorn.

And also, there are two or more large Sargents in the same house, maybe the same room even. Also a large Boldini.

Denise, I think the Bouguereau you referred to "Young Girl...Eros" is now in Wilmington, NC instead, on loan from the museum in Raleigh. Better check first.

Birmingham Museum of Art

Holly,

This may be a bit out of the way but at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama we have two Sargent painting's: "Lady Helen Vincent" and a Frans Hals copy he painted. There is also a Bouguereau (I forget the title).
