Ms. Loretta

I have two photo finalists. One with the benefit (?) of a reflector and one without. This will be my next project when I finish my present commitment. I would love to hear any comments as to preference.

Ms. Loretta

Hi Mike, my immediate reaction was #1. The lighting is much more flattering to her. #2 looks very harsh, she looks somewhat intimidating and "older".

Recommend another photo shoot

Mike, when I squint at both pictures I see very little detail, even less detail in #2 than in #1.

After reading all the posts about proper lighting, it makes me wonder if you might not be better off to ask the model back for another photo shoot.

As far as poses go I prefer #2, because of her attitude and because it makes her face less broad. Which one does she like best?

I'd go with #1. Better light/shadow ratio, interesting hands, etc.

Hi Mike,

I think you're doing such a fantastic job with all your portraits. You have a lot of guts.
I've been through an entire art program and I am not as prolific as you are. I really just want to applaud you for your spirit! It's a wonderful thing; you truly are inspiring!

Okay, so about the photo, I like the pose of #2 but the lighting of #1. I Have recently read about portraits of people who are more mature... that lighting from the front is most flattering. hope that helps. I'm sure the pros will give better info!

Best of Luck!

Sincerely,
Carolyn

Carolyn,

Thanks for your kind remarks.

In the two photos above, part of my reason for posting them was to demonstrate the effect a white foam board can have on the shadow side of the subject.

As to art programs, I have not attended any. After plodding along for so many years without any instruction I think I was beginning to develop an attitude. This "self-taught" notion was starting to show up as a "badge of courage." Something which was a kind of perverse source of pride. I've taken it this far on my own, by golly, I can surely take it the rest of the way.

This of course is pure nonsense.

Having spent a good deal of time studying the resources of this Forum, I believe that I can no longer with honesty proclaim myself to be a self-taught artist. I shall stand on the bow of the ship (hopefully something large and private) and toss my badge into the deep. Then retire back to the cabin and a nice pate de foie gras.
