As a new FT Professional pastel portrait artist, I have noticed a great deal pf price difference from one artist to the next. That is to be expected for many reasons, but something that does perplex my already taxed brain is, why the "discount" for different media (i.e. paintings done in oil vs. pastel or color vs. black & white, etc.)? Is not the client paying for talent, skill, education, materials, etc. Which take place in all commissions regardless of what is used on the surface?
I've seen such tremendous talent on this site and I am extremely grateful for the information found here! It certainly motivates me to get to the studio and get the job done!
Also, should prices be less for pieces that take one week as opposed to one year? The general public seems to have the idea if it takes me one week to complete a portrait, it should be priced less than an oil (it's not my fault that oils take longer because of drying time).
Any input would be helpful.
