Interestingly, Greene goes to some length in his "Color" video to make his case against the "rule" that warm color advances and cool recedes. Contrast and edges, he says, have more to do with it. I understand his point, since I have done many black and white pieces with appreciable depth created solely through contrast and edges. On the other hand, I've been fighting a landscape that just wouldn't lie down and be still, until I removed some of the (warm) reds from the more-distant middle ground, immediately sending those fields off into the distance, even though I did not alter the value or change the edgework.
