This is a commissioned portrait that I just finished. It is 20" x 16" done in oils. This was done from a photo that the client mailed to me. Would have rather taken my own photos but am not in the league yet of having clients pay my passage out to them...maybe one day. One can always hope!

I actually dragged my feet on this one because I had so few photos to go on but I am pleased with the outcome. The light source was not that clearly defined. He has a brother that I have been commissioned to paint as well. They will hang beside one another. I start him next once I get the O.K. on this one from the client.

Thank you, Lon. They are pleased but...they want his cheeks to look a little smaller. I think I can do that without ruining it - I hope.

Hi, Virginia.

Lovely painting! I think you have been so successful in losing the lower edges of the figure in a very nicely done vignette. I also like the strong basic color harmony you have used.

I am sure you can make the cheeks appear smaller simply by changing their values a tiny bit, without much fuss.

Congratulations, fine job.

Well, Virginia, I would do as little as possible to the cheeks. They may be wrong, and just a bit sensitive to the weight issue.

Hi Virginia,

I think your portrait of this little boy is just lovely. I think his cheeks look just fine, but you have to please the client. (You should see my 7 year old son's cheeks, or mine for that matter!). I like the way you ended the body to make the vingette and I am curious to hear how you made your decisions about the background. Specifically how you decided to add the yellow. Can't wait to see this cute boys brother's portrait!
