" Mrs. Asher B. Wertheimer" and 漸

Viewing Sargent's Mrs. Asher B. Wertheimer , one can relates its handling of value, notably, from her right hand to left hand, to I-Ching's Hexagram 漸.

Hexagram 53 is named 漸 (ji

This essay is written by my friend, a talented "riddle solver", Mr.T (Let's talk):

What I said maybe is a nonsense:

You said Ena and Betty, Daughters of Asher and Mrs. Wertheimer in his wife's right are crooked mouth. I have noticed other paintings of him, Mrs. Cazalet and Children of Edward and Victor in the mouth's left corner are crooked.

Let us make some speculations:

(1) Because of the influence of popular impressionism , people pay more attention to their environment. and light, this let Sargent painted both mouthes distorted in the dark side. You can observe, there is at the top of dark light or when the lower lip and cheek, while the distortion caused by the false impression of the mouth. To this false impression, in the eyes of the Impressionist seems true. This is why mouthes of children and young girls are less of distortion. They are in a positive light, and their faces are fuller, it is not easy to see the line of contrast.

(2) It maybe is because of that these are some upper class. At that time, the lady showed slight towards the artist. For the performance of their elegance and reserved manner, their mouth would distorted a little unconsciously.

(3) these may be family trait. Artist must not only deal with reality to maintain the original shape, but not looks ugly. Otherwise, can not get the money, ha ha.

我一无所知,哈哈。瞎说一下:

你说的 Ena and Betty, Daughters of Asher and Mrs. Wertheimer 中夫人的右嘴角是歪的。我注意到他的另一幅画 Mrs. Cazalet and Children Edward and Victor 中的夫人的左嘴角是歪的。

让我们做几个猜测:

(1)由于萨金特深受印象主义影响,对光线和人物所处环境比较注重。那两个嘴都

Viewing Sargent's "Mrs. Asher B. Wertheimer" for 3 months

Much obliged for the joint effort of New Orlean Art Museum and Charlotte Mint Museum, I had the rare opportunity to view many of master works, especially by Sargent, Mary Cassatt.

The color in "Mrs. Asher B. Wertheimer" is similar to one of his representative work, portrait of Mrs Swinton, http://jssgallery.org/Paintings/Mrs_George_Swinton.htm
which is a turning point for him, bringing many commission for the artist, who wrote a letter to acknowledge it.

This comparision may tell us that he, perhaps Mrs. Asher B. Wertheimer also, intended to emulate the previous one, but did not satisfy both of them. Since I viewed more than 12 times in the museum, gradually I found out some weak spots. The second portrait is more successful .

First time I took a close look and fall love to Mary Cassatt's work, admiring the transparency in her oil.
