Really super painting, Margaret! I looked at the detailed version on your website to get an idea of the marks you made - wonderful stuff! You should put a link here to that page so others can view it. I really like the way the face merges into the background, and keeps the form, and this one works very well focusing on just the face and letting the background be subservient. A very intelligent choice (although it does take some thought and experimentation to bring it to success - as I am finding out all the time).
I am thinking somewhat about Japanese art where the slightest mark is left in its initial form to convey such a satisfying aestheticism. I have gone on so many month-long hikes to find the perfect resting place in my paintings, and am realizing that the short wanderings with the paintbrush around the canvas right at the beginning are much more where I want to be, and I feel that you might be thinking in the same way. Does having a successful, respected and enjoyable profession as a GP give you freedom to enjoy and be so bold with your art-making as much as you do/are?

Thank you for your thought-provoking response as ever, Thomasin
Like you, I'm thinking more than ever about mark making. I admire the work of Tai-Shan Schierenberg, Maggi Hambling and Lucien Freud
My work as a GP compliments painting beautifully
I get to study many faces every day as we talk
Thank you again
Margaret

Beautiful work, Margaret - it's so interesting how you are able to convey a feeling of intensity with such painterly brushstrokes. I feel as if I know this man.

Dear Margaret,
I find this to be a very intense, soulful, and psychological study. Everything that it is is in the eyes and they hold the viewers eyes with such power! Thanks for linking the higher resolution image, it is fascinating to look at.
Beautiful piece!

That's great Carlos.
I'll get him framed then, he's quite delicate as unfortunately he started as a scribble on some spare cartridge paper!

Margaret,
I love the overall tone of the colors you have chosen for Ian. His slight tilt forward adds drama and makes this a vey captivating image. Really lovely!

Thanks, Enzie.
I usually enjoy using bright colours, I toned this one down to 'earthiness' instead!
Think I'll try more with this palette
