Portraits of Joseph Daily

At the last portrait agency seminar, for the fun of it, there was an afternoon set aside for the artists to paint from live models. I was given a profile position of our model Joseph Daily. I wasn't completely inspired with the view. So, when some of the artists with a front view packed up for the day I slipped over and did another sketch. I thought it would be fun to post them here. The profile sketch was done in a little more than an hour. The front view sketch was done in about 45 minutes. They're both oil on 16"x20" canvas board.

Just wanted to say, as being a part of this conference, it was very difficult to not run around and watch everyone paint. However, Steve is so fast and accurate, even with a bunch of hecklers behind him.
Ended up watching most of this portrait take shape. Steve is so much fun to watch paint.
I believe he was the only one to finish 2 sketches during that afternoon of the conference.

I can't wait until we can do it all again. It was so fun. Thanks for being a part of it all.

And this portrait of Joseph looks, as his new found title sounds, the unofficial court painter of the Churchill family in the U.K.

That is a wonderful head. That is why I encourage so many artists to do so. It is addicting!

My lastest client is sitting. She is a beautiful Boston girl of 15 (lucky me).

This is very nice Steve. Such good solidity with so few strokes.

I also want to take this opportunity to say that your "Andalusian Lady" (which has always stuck in my mind since I first saw it on the PSoA website) is superb! Better, in fact, than the 2006 Grand Draper prize-winner. Even though Romulo Galicano's "Eddie" has a more complex composition, your painting has a mastery that is supremely sure. That genius black outline on that (perfect) pink top, and the lovely background (and the very clever way the canvas becomes the backdrop to the figure, giving an extra sense of 3-d reality), the composition, and the flesh - it's all just wonderful.

Would it be too much to ask you to post it here with some close-ups. I took a look at your website, but it wasn't there, and the PSoA image is quite small.
