Dan,

I love this sketch! The brushstrokes do have a lot of energy, and that makes it fun to look at. I especially like how you fit this composition tightly into the 8 x 10 boundaries. The neck/chin and hand form a really strong triangular base and the red knitted cap pushes against the top.

I like this very much, too! It really conveys the sense that artists can have fun, too

Thank you Chris, I think fun is an apt way to describe these small studies, here's a few more. I wanted to thank you also for the wonderful articles you have written on getting started as a portrait artist. Some very helpful information, and much appreciated.

Thank you Alexandra and Sharon these last two are just 5x7 and were each done in about twenty minutes in preparation for larger works this technique of doing a small initial sketch is one that I will certainly continue to use and develop.Thank you for your encouraging comments.
