Good question and one I have not addressed before. I'm going away for a week but will attempt a short demo and explanation elsewhere in a post when I return. It is a dandy way to drastically "short cut" the process of underpainting. I'm not sure if anyone else does it or if this method even has a name. Who knows, maybe I invented it...but I doubt it.
