Rose gray

I was passing time with a very good local portrait artist at his studio over the weekend. During my visit he pulled out a tube of what he said was a new color: Holbein's Rose Gray.

I'm no paint officianato, but this looked like a very nice flesh tone to me. Even the name is intriguing. He squirted a bit out on his glass palette and began to tint it to the cool and then to the warm. It looked very nice, I think I may need to get a tube.

I don't usually get too involved with all the many colors, but this color looked better to me than anything I have in my bag when it comes to a good starting flesh color.

This guy I was with is a fantastic portrait artist. He studied with Richard Schmid at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He looks like he's about the same age as Schmid. He has some of those wonderful qualities of technique that I see in Schmid's paintings. I learn tons when I am with around him.

Looks a lot like Indian Red grayed out with a little white.

It's too bluish there (jerrrys), Richard. I am sure it must look a lot warmer, or at least neutral, when seen live. Mike can confirm this.

I am so glad I read this thread this summer! I recently bought a tube of this color by Holbein and I love it! Just like Mike said it works really well to cool it with white or warm it up with a yellow. I had used their Violet Gray and really liked it so this color makes a nice addition to my palette!
