What kind of Varnish over Damar Retouch?

Hi -

I have a painting which kept having spots that needed retouch varnish even after oiling out. Since it needed to go in a show, I used plenty of the Damar retouch, so now it's quite shiny. My question is - I would prefer to use a modern varnish like Gamlin which will not turn as yellow as Damar probably will eventually. Is there any problem in putting this over the Damar retouch stuff?

Julie,

I would suggest that you email the Gamblin company and ask your question there. Let us know what you find out.

One thing that is important is to let the painting dry well before the final varnish, or it will keep on being uneven in the glare.

Okay, I'll email them and see if they can give me an answer.

Meanwhile, the Gamblin site has a lot of interesting information on varnishes and varnishing. See, for example:

Thanks

Thanks, Steven -

I've learned that next tiime, if I want to use a Gamblin varnish, I dilute it as recommended and use it as a retouch varnish.

I tried to email Mr. Gamblin, but the email address on the website I found for him didn't work - I got my message bounced back to me.
