Sargent thoughts

When I was painting with the California Art Club at Mission San Juan Capistrano I was reminded of Sargent's Venice paintings the moment I walked into the place. I really tried to just paint what I saw very precisely, like he did. This one is 14" x 11".

Here is one such Sargent - it's not the one I first thought of but it works.

Your picture is very charming.

The Sargent picture you mention reminds me of the impact this Venice street scene had on me when I first saw it at the National Gallery in Washington. The picture is rather small but has more drama than some of the huge canvases hanging just across the hall. You feel the chill this woman has, either from the sharp wind blowing off the canals or the vulgar remarks the two guys are making about her, or both. Her gesture is so familiar. You can almost smell the street.

I redid the study larger in the studio; 24" x 16".

Dear Tim:

The larger version is very tranquil. The beams above and the colonnade create a quiet rhythm while the woman walks on unaware she is being observed. The first version is very different, almost surreal. The woman appears startled perhaps from that haunting de Chiricoesque shadow.

Scott, I honestly wanted to retain the first, so I painted the second for a gallery who very much wanted the first. I met some neat folks there in CA. including Dan Thompson and Jason Situ. I want to retain the small one for myself. Everyone likes the larger one better except me...maybe a emotional thing?
