Blotchy background

I've just completed a painting with a very deep plum background. There also are areas of Alizarin crimson, and Ultramarine blue.

As it has dried, some areas are blotchy, and some reflect. Can I cover the whole background with Venice turpentine, should I oil it, or varnish to give it a more uniform appearance?

Jean
