I wanted to post some samples from Tim's workshop this past week. It was great!

It was not just for portrait/figure drawing, but included still life and other exercises.

To start, here is the demo that Tim did of Gina who is an occasional poster at SOG. This is a zoomed in digital of the one that follows, so I am not sure the quality will be the best.

This photo includes Gina and Tim.

The facility we were in is just getting started, so Tim did not have the luxuries that we have become accustomed to, like Scottsdale.

Tim likes to work right on top of the subject matter for two reasons:

1. Your canvas will have the same lighting as your subject, still or life; and

2. You can use your brush to help size with horizontals that seem to work on the same plane.

This shows my painting partner, who just happened to be 6'6", and my set up with the model.

You see the paintings in the background, because we had to use the main gallery for north light.

We spent a little over 1 1/2 days on the life portion of our exercises, so this might not appear as finished as I would have liked, but I know that is not what a workshop piece is about!

We worked on two still life set-ups, which is something I do not do enough of. I think Tim really excels at still lifes, and I was very happy with the results of my copper study.

Now it is off to NC. I can honestly say I am exhausted.

Beth, thanks so much for posting this information here, and on your site. I particularly liked reading Tim's tips on placement of the easel relative to the subject, etc.

It's clear that your work is making great leaps. I particularly like the head of the blonde girl you painted. Very fresh color!

The cools under the girl's chin were very nicely done. The direct light was very warm yet had northlight fill and thus provided some lovely temperature opportunities-AND she nailed those. In person this is more visible in the work.

It sounds like this was a wonderful workshop. I wish I could have attended it. Your painting of Gina looks especially fresh and alive.
