Consider




Look at the detail from Michele. Think about what he did to be able to do that. He underpainted and let the red/brown and dark brown color dry underneath fully intending to overpaint with the background and to extract back to reveal the underpainting. Few artists 4 centuries later think that far ahead or care so much.
