Hanna,

I'm in a bind of time, but I surely wish to respond at least to your post, and say that my intent was not to be critical of your very touching painting of a loved one, but to admit my own inability to help you with details about design, lighting, and color, because I didn't know from the posted image the essence of what you were trying to convey.

I don't think any of us wished to discourage you in any way. We often think here more in universal terms rather than personal. If you've captured something very personal to you and the subject of this portrait, then by all means make the most of it, and godspeed and best wishes,

Steven

A lovely present!

Hanna, you have created a lovely mood in this picture. I am sure she will love it.

One thing, look at the reference of her nose, You have made the nostril to our left too bright or too obvious. Tone it down.

For the future, do a value study of Vermeers "Girl with pearl earring" in charcoal or soft pencil. Next do a study of a head from life in similiar light, again in black and white. This will help you with your form and values.

Sincerely,
