Mother and Child

Hi all,

I'm new here and wanted to post a reference pic and rendering of a graphite pencil I did last year. This was from a frozen shot of a video at a visit to the newborn's home.

Very nice, Geary. I like the mood.

When my kids were little all the photos I took of them were done with flash (I wasn't painting portraits then and didn't know that's a no-no for shooting reference photos to paint from.) However I have lots of video footage of them, in natural light. Seeing your drawing gave me the idea that perhaps those videotapes have all the reference I need, to do some paintings of them when they were little tykes.

Thanks Michele. Yes...the video capture is a great tool for that. In fact, just playing the video (which I saved as mpeg) on my computer a few times while drawing this, really enhanced the "mood". It's like having the reference photo moving around! Sort of a digital live sitting........Ha!

This is precious. Do I recognize the mother as the same woman in your WIP post? If so, is this by any chance your grandchild? It is a very nice piece.

Why, yes Janel....good eye! This, indeed, is my girl and my 11 day old granddaughter. This film was shot September 10th, 2001.......one day before the 9/11 terrorist attack. So glad we were in California at the time.
