Stand Oil

I have been told that stand oil lengthens the drying time of the oil paints on canvas, which is what I am seeking.

I purchased Winsor & Newton Linseed Stand Oil/Petroleum Distillate. The odor set me on my heels and, seriously, almost knocked me to the floor. I am guessing it was the petroleum distillate that did this.

If stand oil is purchased separately, does it have an odor or does it smell like linseed oil? Linseed oil odor is very pleasant to me, go figure.

I have, in addition, been told that a 50/50 mix of stand oil and turpenoid will extend the drying time of paint on canvas.

I am looking for something that will stay wet on canvas for a few to several days.

Thank you for you input.
