Stand Oil

I have been told that stand oil lengthens the drying time of the oil paints on canvas, which is what I am seeking.

I purchased Winsor & Newton Linseed Stand Oil/Petroleum Distillate. The odor set me on my heels and, seriously, almost knocked me to the floor. I am guessing it was the petroleum distillate that did this.

If stand oil is purchased separately, does it have an odor or does it smell like linseed oil? Linseed oil odor is very pleasant to me, go figure.

I have, in addition, been told that a 50/50 mix of stand oil and turpenoid will extend the drying time of paint on canvas.

I am looking for something that will stay wet on canvas for a few to several days.

Thank you for you input.

Geri,

Try some Clove Oil. You can find it at places like health food stores, etc.

Mix a tiny amount into the piles of paint; your paint will stay wet for a long time. Even here in the desert, my paint has stayed wet for several days.

You'll either love the smell or hate it. I happen to love it.

Chris,

Thank you for your reply. Clove Oil has been recommended. I have a severe sinus/odor allergy and the smell of cloves are not in my "sinuses" realm of acceptability. Than's why I was considering Stand Oil.

Anyone have any experience with Stand Oil?

Thanks again,
Geri

Geri-

Stand oil is a very common ingredient in a lot of artists' medium, both storebought and homemade.

I mix my ratio of one third stand oil and two thirds odorless mineral spirit for my medium--what little I use--and it dries faster than a 50/50 mix. Here in the South, that's an advantage. It still stays wet for a day or two at least. You might also try Gamsol OMS since it's more refined and your sinuses might take it well enough.

Play around with different mixtures until you get something you like.

Best--TE
