Finding my artist's voice
I have been very busy lately with portraits of children under the age of 6, wondering why I get so may commissions of the very young. I have heard other artist's opinions on how difficult it is to paint a very young child, nearly impossible from life.
Yet, I have not lost this overwhelming compulsion to focus on the very young. I believe the direction I am going with my subjects is as much philosophical as it is simply my desire. I have long felt that children under the age of three are far wiser than we can ever know because of there language limitation, so they often don't get the credit they deserve for being intelligent, observant, emotionally wise little human souls. In my art this is what I seek to express.
Sunday I photographed two little boys ages 6 and 3. After sending mom some of the images (attached) her response was such a beautiful confirmation that I am on the right track!
"I almost cried, I thought these were so beautiful [photos]. You have absolutely captured Jack in print. I love image 1 and image 2 and feel like I can see right to Jack's heart in them. I really felt that you connected with the boys. Kids have no filters, as you know and your ability to get down on their level and earn their trust is all the endorsement I need" - D Popovich, Newbury OH
These portraits are going to be black and white oils.
