My Latest

Here is my latest painting. It is an oil sketch that I painted from life in under five hours. What is your latest critique?

Judson, your faces are improving. I like that you have a sense of light and shadow and I like the skin tones.

Double check those very different eye sizes, however; they seem too different.

There is a very light area in the shadow side of the temple, near a curl.
This light area is near the hairline and is in the shadow area. The shadow area should read as all shadow, and right now that light area jumps out. If you will lay your finger over that too-light area, you should note an immediate improvement to the three-dimensional feel of the face.

The drawing in the body needs improvement. Right now there is a cartoon quality to it, especially in the torso. Things are over-exaggerated and placement does not seem to be correct. If you have a photo to which you can refer, you might want to use it to check your drawing.

I like your persistence. Hope you make these corrections and post the changes.

Eneas, your drawings and paintings have improved tremendously. Here you have reason to be excited in regard to your accomplishment. I am sure that you can see room for improvement and this will come with proper study and practice.

As for the critique, your over all proportions seem accurate, the size of the head and limbs fit with in the structure. The color/value is good but there is room for adjustments. The head is quite well done color/value vise but the highlights, especially in the eyes, seem to bright. Now if you compare the color/value in the head and you compare it with the color/value of the torso you will notice that the consistency is lost, the unification. Sometimes when we paint we concentrate so much on one area we forget to look at it as a whole and that is why the consistency of the fall of light is lost. Do you understand what I am referring to? Then again the lightness of his body skin can be lighter than the face skin. I believe, even without seeing the model, that you have it a bit to light and this could be the reflections.

Again this is a grate leap in your work.

All the best to you

Judson, your work is really improving, especially as shown in the face of this figure. The torso, as has been pointed out, could use some refinement and correcting, though.

Enjoying your progress

Judson,
I really do enjoy watching you grow. There is so much to like about this painting so far. The face is strong in personality, a proud man and strong. I am looking forward to seeing how you resolve the torso issues mentioned. When finished it will be a strong piece. wow, you have grown so much as an artist...
