I started this today 25" x 19" on Canson. It was originally in the resource photo section with him on the beach. It is a picture of my son from 1.5 yrs ago, and an expression I remember so well. I really didn't want a portrait of him on the beach. I don't know what struck me to do it on a black background. Do you think this is working, or no? If so, would you leave it plain, or put some variance of color in the background?

Portrait Thoughts
Hello Mary,
I have looked at this portrait several times, and I still am a little unsure of how to respond to your question. I think the question about the background is more of a personal taste question rather than a visual element question. I looks to me that this piece can stand on its own, as is. I am not sure what you would do to the background? It has fresh look that could get muddied up by fussing with it too much or by adding arbitrary colors behind him. I like the light on his hair and face and the background adds a strong/interesting contrast---which isn't all bad. It seems to me, in this case, the background is an artistic decision that should be left up to you. I wouldn |
