Since I designed the web site for John Howard Sanden, I had photos of his current and past studio in my files. With his permission, I'm posting some images below.

This first shot is the exterior of his current studio attached to his home in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Awesome shots of the most beautiful studios I have ever seen! Thank you for posting.

I showed these to my husband and said, "I want this!"

He seems to think that Mr. Sanden makes more money at this portrait thang than I do. I wonder why.

Absolutely beautiful!

Cynthia,

What color did Mr. Sanden paint the walls in his studio? In the pictures it looks like it could be a shade of brown, but I really can't tell.

Thanks

I queried Mr. Sanden regarding the wall color. Here is his response:

A fairly dark brown. Purely a decorating concept -- this has nothing to do with painting.

Thanks, Cynthia.

I remember reading that Bouguereau had his studio painted a 30% gray. Also someone else, I can't remember who, maybe Sargent, also painted his studio a dark brown.

I noticed something very interesting in the first image of Sanden's studio interior that was posted. Take a look at the top left corner of the photo. He seems to have attached a light bank to the window, about a third of the way down. I imagine that this is so he can paint in the evening or on dark days, while still approximating the direction of the window light. Great idea!

You're right, what genius design.

The Sargent Society

As nice as John's studios are you cannot top the experience of attending The Sargent Society meetings at John's 57th St studio.

On the first Friday of the month fellow members of the group would meet, share recent work with other artist from in and around the city and then get to hear and see John explain and recreate one of Sargent's well known paintings. It was a long bus ride from PA to NYC and I did not get to bed until 2.30 the next morning, but the fond memories will last forever. He is a great teacher and all around fine person.
