First Oil Commission Ready to Deliver

Well, "stick a fork in it, she's done"!! I know there is allot I could work on on this portrait, but I'm afraid of ruining what I have finished. Mostly, I am happy that I started it and saw the project to completion. Sr June, who is in charge of Archives and has worked on this project with me saw it today and it ABSOLUTELY tickled pink. "Oh, you brought her to life!!"

So, what did I learn from this? MY WORD, I have SO MUCH to learn. It is dauntiong and overwhelming. And my awe and respect for all the professionals here has climbed immeasurably. But, I did have fun with the process. And I can't wait to start the next painting, which I think will be very simple exercises in color from life!!!

Pat,

I've been away for a while (extremely busy these days) but I've been peeking in every now and then. I saw this piece and wanted to send a much deserved congragulations to you. What a nice piece this is! And it's your first! I watched you progress since you joined the forum and you are a great example of how the two "P's" can pay off for anyone (Patience & Persistance).

I look forward to seeing many more of these.

Patricia, I just love the way you've brought her to life and yet still maintained such a stylistic austere simplicity that is totally in keeping with the subject. It has the wondrous quality, to me, of being completely contemporary while capturing the feel of times past.

John, the sisters kept asking me if this would look old fashioned. I think they did not want a painting that looked dusty and relic old. And I learned she was 29 when she laid the foundation for the motherhouse. So I wanted it to look contemporary but in a traditional and simple format. Your compliment really means so much, I'm tickled.

Patricia,

You have done a wonderful job on this portrait. I especially like the simple masses of color, black and white, blue and flesh color. And the variation of edges, sharp and soft.

In many years from now, after you have been very clever and famous, you will return to this simple concept of two colors and a delicate line that vanish and appears.
