Girl with the other pearl earring
After Vermeer. 20 x 16 in., oil on canvas.
My concept for this is as a painting by the painter at the next easel over at a national portrait workshop. This is still in progress; there is some glare off the wet paint. Critiques gratefully requested, digital demonstration ok.

Here is the original "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Vermeer, and a photo that I used as the basis of the pose.

Well, Chuck, you may be on to something here. The notion of seeing an Old Master set-up from another vantage point is intriguing (and certainly marketable

Hi Steven,
Thanks for your critique. I knew that inventing the light would be the toughest part of the painting, but the pose in the photo reminded me so much of Vermeer's painting that it inspired me to try it anyway. If I do more paintings of this type, I will be sure to get reference photos with correct lighting and better costuming, to make it easier for me.
I will be working on the painting some more this weekend, on things you pointed out and some other things I see. I'll see how convincing I can get it, and post the result.
