The purpose of these strips is to be able to isolate different values for the purpose of comparison. Their black material blocks out all surrounding areas so one can, by aligning the holes, compare different values. For example, the shadow side of the model can be compared to the light side of the background to see which, if either, is lighter or darker.
I have students use this when assessing the live model before them. Since the values placed on the painting are premixed on the palette my students should be aware of what the values are.
One of the main goals of my teaching is to get the brain out of its subjective assumptions and into a place where observation can take place objectively. This little device does a great job to that end.

The final stretch. At this stage, I visit the painting for any adjustments.

Dear Jeanine,
The head is still too small for the body.

Dear Chris and Steven,
New photos have been posted above for a more accurate repesentation. (The shirt showed up much brighter and lighter in the previous images and the darks appeared darker.)
Since this issue had been pointed out earlier, I took care not to emphasize the shirt or the background painting. Still, I agree with Steven that his skintones may come up a notch.
Chris, I will re-check my measurements. Sometimes, when I finish off edges, my heads shrink!
The challenging source image was given to me by Mr. Passantino for his portrait. I feel compelled to make it work as close to the orginal as is artistically reasonable. In a way, it is my homework assignment!
Thank you for your caring comments,
Jeanine

Final Stretch
At the risk of boring you all, here is today's progress.
The shirt has been darkened (finally!), skintones lightened, head/features broadened, and pants lightened in areas slightly. Better?
Eyes and other details will be reviewed tomorrow in their new context.
Time is running out on this one and I thank you all for watching keeping after me!
