Spencer - NuPastel on Hannemuhle Velour board

Today I attended my first open session with the Prescott Mountain Artists' Guild. Such a nice group of artists- only five of us with an excellent model, Spencer, who was about ten.

I tried a new paper that Sharon K made me buy, whose name I cannot recall for the life of me - when I get the info from her I will fix the title

It is a gray velour-type paper mounted to a cardboard-like surface so it is quite stiff; the surface can take a fair amount of abuse, and lighter charcoal and NuPastel marks can be lifted rather well with a kneaded eraser. I used some pencil/charcoal pencil and a little viine charcoal to make my first marks, then modeled using a deep reddish brown NuPastel, white charcoal pencil and white NuPastel.

You can see the velvety quality of the paper in the background strokes.

Dear Chris

This is a very lovely drawing. You are so good! Look at that wonderful nose and eye. I love the reflected light and confident, strong marks. You draw like you are sight reading and so your work is like a song.

Chris

Beautiful draftsmanship this one goes into my favorite drawings folder.

Looking forward to knowing what kind of paper was used.

Chris,

I just saw this--what a beautiful drawing! I've been staring at the close-up, admiring the exquisite marks that suggest the features by describing the edges and transitions of the different planes. As a whole it projects life and immediacy. I'd like to see this in person.

Can you post details of other parts of the drawing?

Ok! Ok!

It is not the artist that made this great drawing. It is of course, the paper I told her to get! GEEZ!

I had to dig my workshop art supply list out of the trash (computer) to find this. It is a beautiful paper and a beautiful drawing.

Nice drawing Chris. I like his expression. He looks just slightly uncomfortable befitting for his age. :-)

Dear Chris,

You are giving us so much to look at with relative little application. Great work! Here the term "less is more" hits the target.
