Worth the wait
I went to the Met this past Sunday to see a preview of the Manet/Velasquez exhibit. It was a great show demonstrating Spanish influence on French and American painters. The majority of the work was portraits. I saw this one first because there was a huge line for da Vinci. Normally, this exhibit would have been enough to satisfy my visit. So I waited about an hour for the da Vinci. If anyone's familiar with the floorplan, the line went around the balcony, through a room of the Asian section (three loops), back through the balcony.... it was long. This was the best exhibit I've ever seen. I've always loved drawings by Ingres for it's detail, but da Vinci's work is more intense and passionate. I just wish there was more time to view them, as there were five or six people over shoulders trying to get a better look. I looked through the book at the end and it's ok, the price is good for such a big book, but after viewing the show, it did'nt seem worth it. I know that print is never as good as seeing the original, but I guess his work, many being on paper and no more than 11x14, just does'nt translate as well. I hope to make it back before the end of the month and stongly suggest anyone in the area to visit.
