Posthumous

After seeing Enzie's painting, I hesitate to post this. It is a commission for a sixteen year old of her and her puppy who recently passed away. The help I got in the critique session improved the way the dog's ear reads - thanks guys. (my reference was a 4" x 6" photo)

Thanks for looking.

My next commission is a painting, my first oil commission, You will see me allot in the critique session and WIP for sure!.

Have a great weekend.

Patty

Patty,

Job well done!

A few years ago I painted a poshumous portrait of my neighbor's dog from a tiny, not-so-good photo, so I know what you went through with this.

Although it would be great to always work from excellent references, it's just not always possible, especially in the case of poshumous portraits. In this case you could not pose the girl and use a stand-in dog! That wold have been totally unacceptable and meaningless from the girl's point of view. This is for the girl and it should be meaningful to her. I think you've done a fabulous job with a limited reference photo and I know this will mean a great deal to her.

Thank you Alexandra. I appreciate the sympathetic response. You nailed my feeling about it, the difficulty of working from a less than desirable referece. I do hope she enjoys the drawing!

Patty, not every drawing or painting can be a masterwork and there will often be plenty that could have been done better.

But as a professional portrait artist you received a commission, worked with the limited resources available, and made your client very happy. That is so commendable!

Nice job, Pat! Good delicacy and not overworked.

Many congrats on the oil commission.
