Small 2hr oil sketch from life, for a class taught by Jim Decasare (hope I spelled that correctly) the class was all about color.

Hello Grethe, this is a small sketch just 8x10 the class I did this in was all about making these small colorful sketches in preparation for the larger painting. We did several sketches of this young man he has a very interesting face and was an excellent model.

Thank you Michelle, we were encouraged to throw caution to the wind when doing these small sketches, I'm glad you like it.. I have several of these sketches from class, they were all very quickly and loosely done.

Dan,
I love this sketch! The brushstrokes do have a lot of energy, and that makes it fun to look at. I especially like how you fit this composition tightly into the 8 x 10 boundaries. The neck/chin and hand form a really strong triangular base and the red knitted cap pushes against the top.

I like this very much, too! It really conveys the sense that artists can have fun, too
I'd love to see some of the other quickies from this class, if you have them to post.

Thank you Chris, I think fun is an apt way to describe these small studies, here's a few more. I wanted to thank you also for the wonderful articles you have written on getting started as a portrait artist. Some very helpful information, and much appreciated.

Dan,
These are fun and loose. They are an important step in figurative and portrait painting.
