Sam at Binders

This is a three hour alla prima demo painted at Binders earlier this month in front of about 30 eye witnesses. Sam is Lynn McCallum's Mom.

Hi Marvin,

I'm sure Sam and Lynn were thrilled. Your sketch reflects her dignity. I like the touches of white in her hair. It looks as if you still did your raw umber value sketch and then applied color on top? That's a lot to accomplish in three hours.

Holly

Thanks Holly. This was actually done with no underpainting. The canvas was stained with a very light umber tone to kill the white of the canvas.

Marvin, I hope you and Lynn do not mind me posting these images that she sent me.

I wanted to show the great likeness in this "sketch".

I hope Lynn bought this at a bargain price, it would be a true family treasure!

Sam's Painting

My Mom bought the painting and we are quite please with the results. Mom sat very well and enjoyed Marvin's demo too.

She is an artist though she doesn't want to really admit it!

My son, who likes to dabble in art was there to watch too, so there is the story and history to connect to the portrait which is nice.

Marvin is one of the, maybe the best instructor out there. He has great patience in making sure everyone understands what he is trying to get across.

Thanks for posting the photos Beth.

Mom has discovered this site so I guess I will have to start behaving myself here now!
