Pencil sketch . . .

I always encourage pencil artists to use a heavier line. Your lines are thin, spaced far apart, and weak. It is odd, considering how bold you are with the brush, that you should be timid with the lead. You have good form, but your lines are weak. You have some flare with them, however. But your line technique needs some improvement. Darker darks, bolder lines, and more sensitivity to shading. Some people don't like being told how to make a line. In the old days of art school, you had to make lines correctly. Period.

I have abandoned the wood pencils for the Staedtler Mars drafting lead holder with 4B leads. I can sharpen them on a sanding block with no need for a sharpener. The sanding block gives me a wide, full stroke that I can use with greater feeling, sensitivity and variety. It is the old fashioned way, but, I have been told, is the method required in some of the great art schools. I learned pencil from my grandfather, who had an art school in Tacoma. He was the head illustrator with Twentieth Fox (before they became Twentieth Century Fox). Pencil sketches do not reproduce well on the internet, as the subtlties of graphite get lost in the process.
