A fair number of people doing very fine work do this, largely because instruction on the mechanical aspects of proper materials and methods of applying paint has been neglected if not abandoned outright for decades.

That's certainly true. My apologia for delving into the wherefore of materials is that we can't always be at the easel . . . it's a perverse "hobby", rather like the mason making bricks in his spare time.
