Charcoal pricing
As everybody knows, coming up with pricing for different mediums, sizes, subject, etc. can be difficult. I've come up with a fairly decent pricing table for my oil paintings. The problem I'm having now is pricing my charcoal drawings. I've recently decided to offer charcoal drawings as a less expensive alternative for people to invest in that can't afford an oil painting. I know that I shouldn't do them for too cheap because it could bring down the perceived value of my oil portraits but I would also want to be able to market myself to less wealthy clients as well.
I looked through some of the charcoal portraits on SOG and was trying to gauge what I would charge based on a price that others would charge. I seen some people charging 1/2 the price of an oil portrait, 2/3rds of an oil portrait, and some $1,000 less. This made me question my initial pricing but also made me wonder what I should actually be charging safely.
My prices for my oil portraits start at $1,600 for a 16"x20" head and shoulders. I don't have any examples right now of my charcoal drawings but I'll be taking pictures of them this week if any of you would like to see. I'd like to start my sizes at 11"x14" and use that as a base in which to gauge prices for larger work on.
I would appreciate as much feedback on this issue as possible so I can feel confident in my decision.
Thank you in advance.
