Digital Cameras and Flash Systems

I'm thinking of getting a digital camera but was wondering what cameras can be connected to flash systems which you are currently using? I don't have a flash system yet but have access to one at work. I can't see that any of the under $1000 would even do it. Then, would those shoot good enough resolution anyway.

Like Tim mentioned earlier, if you doing a full size photo of full body, resolution probably won't be sufficient unless you go to 10m-11m. What's a guy to do? Any comments.

Or is there a powerful enought light that doesn't flash that would be sufficient. That is what I would really want to get. One light that I could use when drawing/painting from life and as a light when photographing for portraits. Is there anything like that around?
