Medicine Lake

42" x 32" oil. The Pennsylvania Impressionist Daniel Garber was very in my mind as I painted this. I've added two images of his work to see what I mean.
I am taking a class with a local artist Joseph Paquet who is a fantastic landscape painter and teacher. I was lucky to start this painting now, because I think his instruction helped just at the right time. I hope anyone who is in the Mpls./ St. Paul area checks him out if they are looking for a class to take.

:-)

Linda,

I see a very interesting development here. The forms are holding together more, i.e. I see the large shapes, and elements are simplified. Was this what you were working on? I still see the surfaces broken into colors, but there is a hierarchy now, in which smaller pieces are subordinate to the larger ones. Not that this wasn't present before--you have a good sense of composition always--but it is more accentuated and perhaps intentional here. The effect is more serene. Lovely!

I'd like to say I had the forethought and skill to compose consciously, but a lot of what I do is intuitive. I definitely wanted the layers of atmosphere, but for me a big focus was to keep the boat from being too much the subject, and the children from being together while doing their own thing. I'm glad you like it and see an improvement in my work!

Linda,

You always imbue a timeless classic cast to a contemporary setting. The impressionism and color dance really works. A magical and poetic evening to cherish.

Garth

Hi Claude, Hi Garth

Thanks guys - Garth your sentences are downright lyrical - you must have a bit of shakespeare's blood in you...
thanks again, and I hope you are both doing well.

Beautiful light and color, Linda. Very unified and atmospheric.

I see the influence of the "inspiration" paintings, but it's still yours.
