Book bargain for Euromembers

Hi to all.
I was very curious about the Bargue drawing course book, but was put off by the price and the cost of shipping from the States.
Amazon uk doesn't sell it, but Amazon France has it for only 74 Euros shipping included, though it is the french edition.
I logged in with my English identity and it worked. The book is on its way!

Ilaria, I'm so glad you shared that information. They are wonderful drawings to copy and while the text is excellent, even those who don't read French can certainly read the pictures.

Super accurate copy drawing is the quickest way for us to hone our skills with form and likeness. I continue a regular practice of copying and it teaches me to see better, be more patient, and be willing to stay the course when the going gets rough. I still find super accurate drawing to be hard to do, but it pays off in improving my art.

I took my Bargue book to a copy center and had them cut off the book's spine and punch three holes in the pages. I keep the book in a loose-leaf binder and I can easily take pages out and make copies, either enlargements or reductions. It's very easy to scan a loose page on my flatbed scanner.

I hope you enjoy the book as much as I do.

Dear Bill,
thank you very much for the tip which I will follow straight away.
I am planning to work constantly on drawing during this italian summer and I have high expectations on what this practice might do for my skills, if nothing to make me inch forward towards people like you

I plumped for the US version because, even though it's a bit more expensive, it does have some good material on approaches for copying the drawings and an excellent description of how to work sight size. I have found those sections to be pretty useful.

Ilaria, if you like I'll see if I can get some readable scans done of those pages for you. I started out on the first plates without bothering to read them, and must admit I made some pretty daft mistakes

I'm going to have to break the spine on mine too I think. It's going to hurt after paying so much for the book, but the lazer copies I've had done so far have distortion round the edges because the book is too thick to lay flat on the scanner. Thankfully the binding is so poorly done that the book is starting to fall apart all on it's own.

I've been having a look about for this book too and am currently trying to persuade the Dahesh Museum to reply to my emails asking them to ship out to me (4th one sent today).... so just wondering where did you get your copy?

Hehe, I'm liking the weather, I don't do well in heat and the sun comes in my 'studio' (i.e back bedroom) window far too early

Like the other amazon sites, if you have a UK amazon account it will work on the .com too. They charged me about $9 dollars for shipping, so all together I paid

No, not that the text is different, but that it's in English - I assumed that since you were buying the French edition the text would be in French.

Of course, you're a proper European and can speak more than one language, I'm a classic ignorant Brit and have enough trouble getting my own language right

I do know how to ask where the bathroom is in Italian though, so I guess I'm a cut above the average Brit...

Hehe - you'll have seen all my stupid mistakes then. I should stress that I'm figuring it out as I go, and I'm not convinced I'm doing it right yet.

All the same, I will say I've found the value for eye training to be second to none, even when I do it wrong.

Thanks for the link. The main difference between the method they describe and the way I've been doing it is that they are measuring directly on the paper - I'm doing it sight size, taking my measurements with the pumb line standing well back from the easel. It's harder that way I think, but that's kind of the point.

I'm waiting for Mischa to chime in - I gather he's actually had some atelier training at this.

I also think that the actual measuring is easier, you seem to be doing pretty well anyway.
Micha has studied in one of the Florence Academies so he should know, but since he was concerned with the color of the string I think he does actual measuring too.

Thanks Paul - that seems much the cheaper way to buy it - I too have to admit Ilaria's french text version would completely stump me!!

Incidentally The Dahesh Museum have said they would charge $75.00USD for the book plus $50 TNT delivery to the UK... so about
