Portrait of Adelaide Labille-Guiard

Hello everyone:

Here is an 'old master' copy I did of Labille-Guiard's self-portrait. My style is much more abbreviated and impressionistic than hers, so this exercise helped me expand my visual vocabulary quite a bit. Overall I was pleased with the end result. Plus, it was a lot of fun to do! Thanks in advance for your comments!

Hi Willow,

I really like it! Here is a stupid question, but is it a pastel study, it looks that way to me.

Yes, it is pastel...

Dear Alicia,

Thanks for your feedback! I believe this painter worked mostly in pastels - but her work looks so smooth it could almost be oil. Which is one of the reasons that trying to copy her was so appealing to me. Here is a detail of her face/neck.

Cheers,
Willow
