Mary,

I can't tell if the background was set in by you or whether it's the paper color. If it is the color of the paper I guess reducing the size of that feature might be more difficult. My intention was to reduce it to it's minimum and soften it substantially so it would become a non issue. You'll just have to play with the shape.

I also agree with Michele that if you drew it just the way the photo shows that it could work. The way you have indicated the dark value on the outside edge and the way it falls off unnaturally is bringing more attention to that area than you would want. If you go with the photo try and keep the edge and contrast such that it stays back.

Also, if it were eliminated all together it looks plausible to me.

I took the arm out!

Better?..Odd?

I was surprised at how well that paper held up to me erasing that arm, however, there still is the faintest outline where it was, If I can't get it to completely go away any suggestions? Or does something so faint you have to look for it not really matter?

Mary,

This is tremendously improved. Warm up those deep shadows more, especially where skin is against skin. Nice highlight in the hair.

I think the composition works well this way.
