I attended a grueling

one day workshop conducted by Chris Saper. She was teaching the Prud'hon drawing technique, which I found very interesting. After many crosshatchings & erasings, this is the drawing I came up with.

I can assure you that this scan does not do justice to the very sensitive, subtle, and fine likeness Richard created.

PS What do you mean grueling!?

Thanks for the nice words, Chris. Did I say grueling? I meant enlightening. Fulfilling. Gratifying. OK, maybe a little exhausting.......

I envy you Richard! I would LOVE to take a workshop with Chris Saper, even if it's for just one day. For me, it would most definitely be "grueling" (in the best sense of the word

) because I have so much to learn. It would take all my courage and concentration.

Hear's an example of what I mean by, "I have so much to learn": What does, Prud'hon mean, and how is it used in painting?

Richard, I'm sure that Chris is right about the scan not doing justice to this moody and powerful rendering. Do you feel as if you gained greater understanding about portraiture after the day was done?

Hi Valerie,

Prud'hon was actually a 19th century French artist whom (I believe) invented the technique.

Absolutely. I aquired a better understanding of lighting and the subtle value changes across the face, not to mention the unique profile view to work from. The class was a great experience.

BTW, Chris was kind enough to offer to digitally re-photograph the drawing for me. Hopefully the image will be higher quality, and I'll repost.
