Hello from Southern California

Greetings all,

I am an independent artist living in Southern California. I am interested in many forms and mediums with in the art world. My time is currently spent between portrait painting and independent filmmaking. My experience in portrait work is limited as I am somewhat new to the world of art (3 years or so). My most recent portrait works have been done from photographs and with oil. I have spent some time looking at the posts and websites of the various members. I am anxious to learn from the vast amount of knowledge that exists here. For those interested, my website is http://www.snodart.com. I look forward to getting to know all the great creators here.

Thank You,

Justin Snodgrass

Welcome Justin, I think you will enjoy this site very much..I have some advice for you already!! Take the time to draw and paint your off-spring and spouseeveryday. I have been a professional portrait painter for 20 years...my children are 26, 24, and 19.
I really regret not using them as models even more than I did...you've got some magic years ahead of you as you grow...artist and child(ren)...together!

Garth Herrick, if you read this, I love the painting you did of your daughter (then sold!). I love "scratching" into paint myself and found that "evidence of the artist's hand" in your painting quite compelling.

Hi and welcome, Justin!

I just checked your site too. You are an incredibly well rounded artist, and I love the portraits of your kid.

I have some Snodgrass ancestry myself. The farmstead my father was raised on in western Pennsylvania was first settled by a Snodgrass, an early 19th century direct ancestor. Where is your family from?

Hi Joy. Thanks, I did read that, and I am overdue on another portrait of Lachlan. It's six years later.

Garth

Hi Justin,
Interesting portfolio - and you are so very versitile! I like seeing artist's work who do both 2D and 3D. Unfortunately, I can't say I'm one of them.

Thank you for the great comments everyone. I have floated around a bit within art; trying to find my place. It has been good to experience different mediums and such, but it has also made it difficult to retain my focus at times. I think that I have gravitated toward portraits and film because they both most often involve people as the subject.

Joy, I will heed your advice. My children are 2 and 5.

Garth, most all of my Snodgrass relatives are farmers and ranchers in Oklahoma. They have been there over 100 years, maybe more.

Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Justin

Justin
Well I believe I'm talking about the 1820's in early western PA . There were some Snodgrass' who settled near the time the Herrick's arrived in the same frontier community in 1816. This is at least a couple of generations before Oklahoma got underway; so there is still room for a distant possible connection...... I'm no expert in these things, but I do still have some alleged Snodgrass relatives living just up the road.
