My Nephew... I thought kids were hard to paint!

I did this painting of my nephew for my sister for her birthday. It's a 12 x 9 on linen, about 5 hours of work.

This was fun. I used to not like to paint kids as they were always difficlut to make them look human. This one went easy for me.

It's called "Little Tom".

Tony, this is a lovely, painterly piece, very evocative of the faces in Sargent's "Carnation, Lily, Rose."

This is a wonderful portrait. The painterly finish is stunning, as is your use of color. When Linda mentioned Sargent's Carnation, Lily, Rose, it occured to me that your nephew is the rose in a verdant field. Very effective!

How did you do this? Did he stand there for five hours so you could capture those fresh colors, or are you especially good with a photo reference? Would you consider a painting demontraion for the Forum sometime?

THis particular nephew couldn't stnad still for more than 10 seconds... he's a little wildcat but a sweet one. I had to paint this from photo. I am not particularly fond of painting from photograph but in cases like this, I have to. I paint from life all the time so it makes it that much easier to paint from photograph.

That's what I thought. Your extensive experience in painting from life informs you in how to interpret a photograph. It would be wonderful to see how you manage to develop a finished painting in five hours; to watch how you begin, make major decisions, block in the values and forms, and keep the whole thing developing at once. Perhaps a photograph per hour showing each advancing stage could teach us a lot.
