Susan
This is Susan who was my model during my one man show for the month of August.
She sat for me 5 times. One day each weekend plus once at my house to do the wash-in.

Here is a close up, plus a small picture of Susan with the early canvas.

Does that mean you were doing a public demonstration? That's gutsy! I doubt I could do that with people watching. Once, during a life drawing session, a guy who liked my drawings stood behind me to watch me work. It was flattering that he wanted to learn from me, but it made me nervous.
I'm really happy for you, getting the one-man show. I hope it went well.
You seemed to capture a good likeness of your model. What kind of lighting did you have? In a retail building, the lighting can give you fits. You seemed to deal with it well.

Hi Beth,
I like it. Like Jeff, I'm curious if you did this as a public demo during your show. That's really adventurous, but a great idea.
At the risk of exposing my ignorance, what's a wash in? Back in the sixties we used to do something called love-ins. Is a wash in something like that, only.......you know what I mean?

Jeff and John, thanks.
This was done as a "live" demo. Actually it was a ton of fun and really made it easier for people to approach me, plus, see what goes into painting from life.
When we first started we painted on a Saturday from 10 am - 1pm. Then we switched to Sundays, the light actually was different just because of this. Just working one day each weekend lead to the other usual challenges like a new hair cut etc.
Unfortunately John, the "wash-in" of the 2000 would only include a cup of Starbucks coffee. But, since so many of the same people came in every weekend, I've decided it must be just as addictive as the old days.
I've included a JPEG of Marvin using his wash-in technique in his NC workshop. As he says "some people call it a 'wipe-off'". It is a great way of drawing, establishing your values and getting the compostition right before you go to color. It reminded me of an "echa-sketch"(?), and is a great way for me to really check my drawing proportions.

Dear Beth:
Nice demo!
I have read your other post. Just think that J.S. Sargent once wanted to quit after his masterpieces already been made.
